What is the CAP Case Archive?
The CAP Case Archive is a large online repository of peer-reviewed cases collected since October 2006 by the Canadian Association of Pathology. The case materials in the rapidly growing Archive are derived from multiple sources including: the Case of the Month archive, annual meeting workshops, online Continuing Professional Development courses (breast, hematology), conferences (Banff Pathology Course, Pathology Update by the University of Toronto (password required), Ontario Association of Pathologists), donated glass slide collections (dermpath, colonic polyps, hempath, breast pathology), and various donated presentations and courses. The CAP Archive is housed online by Objective Pathology Ltd. for the sole use of the Association and it's members. The collection, one of the largest online collections of peer-reviewed pathology cases (hundreds of cases, >2 terabytes in size as of October 2009 and growing), is a comprehensive collection of pathology materials with documented peer-review that include: whole slides scans (H&E, ihc, FISH), clinical histories, pathological diagnoses, gross & clinical photos, photomicrographs, presentations etc. The collection includes hundreds of 120X oil scans of cytology (FNAs & exfoliative), hematology (blood films, marrow aspirates & biopsies, flow cytometry data), scans of: colonic polyps, breast lesions, skin conditions formatted into: courses with virtual microscopy and instructional movies, quizzes, questionnaires, self-assessments, instructional videos, gradable courses/quizzes, CME courses (hematology, breast pathology).
Included in the case archive is ACHEW (the "American & Canadian Hematology Educational Website")-- a collection of hundreds of high-resolution 120X oil scans of virtually every fluid-phase (blood films, marrow aspirate smears, biopsies, flow cytometric data) hematological disorder.
Also, the University of Guelph Veternary School slide collection has public folders containing hundreds of cases from many different fish and animals and high resolution 120X oil scans of blood films from many different animals.
Moodle, a popular, easy-to-use open source course management system platform used by millions of educators worldwide, is fully supported by CAP. In fact, the popular CAP Case of the Month series, with hundreds of visitors monthly from all over the world, is created using Moodle and the CAP Case Archive. Individuals and institutions, will soon be able to open their own CAP account, which will include use of Moodle and access to the CAP Case Archive. Tying together content (the archive) with a course management system (Moodle) provides CAP members with the unique ability for anyone with an internet-connected computer to create curriculum, digital slide boxes and other educational content. Online pathology is easy: no need to collect glass slides, scanning is not necessary (see "benefits of donating case materials to the CAP Archive below), storage and software is provided without the reliance upon 3rd party vendors....create custom digital slide boxes, exams, lectures by Moodling away on your own computer!
In addition to sharing good cases for the betterment of all, donating glass slides means free scanning, unlimited online access and collecting peer-review for your own donated cases! Instead of departments, hospitals, universities and schools incurring costs on scanners, IT, storage and bandwidth use.... take advantage of proven peer-reviewed materials from CAP and a Moodle account.
